Johnny Romeo‘s new show GRINDHOUSE opens @ Porter Contemporary in Chelsea, New York.
February 21st – March 30th, 2013.

Opening Night: Thursday 21st February, 2013 @ 6:30pm – 8:30pm.

GRINDHOUSE, the debut New York show by Johnny Romeo, sees the internationally acclaimed Australian Pop artist in truly incendiary form. A napalm-drenched love letter to grindhouse cinema, the series is a righteously rollicking celebration of all things sex, drugs and rock’n’roll. Drawing on the quirky nihilism of Tarantino and the vicious vixens of classic Russ Meyers, GRINDHOUSE is an explosive exploration of our fascination with death and destruction. Like the schlocky films of its namesake, the series is gleefully irreverent and exhilarating in its seductive, violent energy. With his arsenal of brash, expressive colours, pop-inflected punk grit, and commanding graphic imagery, each work is a visual Molotov cocktail of buxom babes, high-octane cars and skulls that laugh in the face of death.

Blink-182 and Johnny Romeo join forces

Hello. I am a bunny that is 1.5 feet tall. I was painted by the artist Johnny Romeo from Sydney Australia. He is going to hide me somewhere in Sydney with tickets to see my parent’s Blink-182. You might want to like him and follow Johnny on Twitter to find out where he is going to put me.

Skull Bunny is an electrifying collaboration between Blink-182, one of the biggest rock bands in the world, and one of Australia’s most exciting and celebrated artists, Johnny Romeo. Rambunctious and irrepressibly energetic, Skull Bunny combines the grittiness and urgency of punk with the exuberant colour and playfulness of pop.

Johnny Romeo’s ‘No One Gets Out of Here Alive’ series will be part of The Homage to Hollywood Group Show @ 19Karen, Gold Coast

‘No One Gets Out of Here Alive’, the latest series from Johnny Romeo, is both an elegy and homage to Hollywood. The works see the artist drawing on his deep love for music and film to explore the darker underpinnings of fame. Appropriating iconic images of Jimi Hendrix, James Dean, Jim Morrison and Bruce Lee, these portraits engage our fascination with tragic modern day legends. Johnny Romeo has created a series that melds the colourful chutzpah of Pop, the swagger of rock’n’roll and the bleak introspection of the Blues. The works form a seductively grim vision of Hollywood, of a place where the lure of fame is all consuming, a place where no one gets out alive.

The grit, the bravado, the violence…  BLOODSPORT, the latest series from Johnny Romeo, sees the acclaimed artist jump into the ring and deliver a knockout exploration of the world of boxing in all its savage, bombastic glory. Like Scorsese’s ‘Raging Bull’ trading blows with the Pop establishment, BLOODSPORT bristles with an irrepressible urgency, capturing the rawness and energy of boxing. Romeo’s bold, expressive boxers have a distinct character and swagger, combining pop’s love of colour with punk’s ruggedness and ferocity. Johnny Romeo’s new series immerses his audience into the euphoria and mayhem of the boxing – as battle, as spectacle, as BLOODSPORT.
